Tribute to Doc Watson

Arthel Lane "Doc" Watson, described by Wikipedia as "an American guitarist, songwriter and singer of bluegrass, folk, country, blues and gospel music", passed away in 2012 at the age of 89.  I saw him perform live when I was in college, and he was not a young man then.  Although none of his musical styles is a particular favorite of mine, I have long admired his musical scholarship, his impeccable musicianship, his approachable performances and recordings, and his monster chops on acoustic guitar.  One demonstration of those chops is that he performed and recorded many intricate country fiddle tunes on guitar.  If you don't know Doc Watson, you're in for a treat if you'll look him up on YouTube or iTunes.

I took four of my favorite Doc tunes and transcribed them for band.  This arrangement is quite different from any band arranging I've done before, since in some cases I've tried to mimic the sound of his six guitar strings and his voice, resulting in some tricky-to-coordinate interplay between the various instruments in the band.  In other cases I have used his tunes as a point of departure for more standard band material.  There's plenty of intricate passage-work, especially for woodwinds.

Hymn tunes

I play in a Dixieland band, which plays an annual Dixieland worship service for the local Episcopal church which informally sponsors us.  Since the organist takes that Sunday off, we accompany the congregation's hymn-singing, in addition to instrumental selections during the course of the service.

We selected several traditional hymns which might work well with our instrumentation (clarinet, tenor sax, trumpet, trombone, banjo, piano, tuba, drums).  Then I just took the original four-part hymns and broke out the SATB vocal lines, assigning the vocal bass line to the tuba, and providing all three other vocal lines to all the horns, appropriately transposed.  I also added chord names for the banjo player, and to facilitate improvising by the horns.

I instructed the horn players to switch lines at whim to give a different sound to each verse; to provide a strong melody line for the singers to follow; and to swing it.  The rhythm section noodles around the chords and keeps things jazzy.  It all works surprisingly well, thanks to a flexible congregation and to highly supportive clergy.

These charts are nothing which could be called an "arrangement", and certainly not a "Dixieland arrangement", since (in the spirit of jazz) the details are all improvised.  The charts are more of a guide to improvisation, akin to lead sheets or fake book pages.  There's nothing in them that a reasonably competent music copyist couldn't knock out in a hour using music notation software, or even pencil and paper.

But I've had several requests for these materials from people who stumbled across them on the band's website.  Some of the requests were from non-jazz people, who wanted to play the parts straight, certainly a valid use for them which I would never have considered!

So here they are, in PDF (Adobe Acrobat) format, free for the downloading.  (Missing hotspots are under construction.)  Send me a note of encouragement if you find them useful, if you have any technical problems downloading and printing them, or if you have any musical problems playing them.
